Papa SmurfWhenever a Smurf is in need of advice, one can bet that they turn to Papa Smurf first. He is the paternal, wise Smurf of the colony and always is ready to lend a helping hand with the problems that surround the community. He is a distinguished leader that is recognized by the entire Smurf community. At a striking 542 years old, he is one of the oldest Smurfs in the community, with only Nanny and Grandpa Smurf his elder. However, his age never prevents him from lending a helping hand or dishing out knowledge in a situation.Papa Smurf is not only wise from experience, but also extremely intelligent. Unlike the rest of the Smurf colony, he speaks with authority, knowledge, and rarely uses the word "smurf" in his sentences. He remains to be able to provide the level-headed response that the Smurfs need in times of confusion and turmoil. While helping, he also puts aside any judgments he may have about the situation and never chooses sides. He cares only about the well-being of all those that are involved in the situation. It is his altruistic nature that makes him think of the well-being of other before himself. This is a great trait for a leader of a community to have. It helps him keep the peace when there are uncomfortable circumstances laid before him. It is his intelligence with science, as well, that helps the Smurf colony. Papa Smurf's has a laboratory in his home that is a place where he can indulge in his love for magical chemistry and experiment. He often creates many potions and elixirs that can help solve the problems within the community. This also includes the challenge of prolonging the Smurf lifespan. He would turn to science when advice alone could not help solve the situation. And while his mixtures do not always work, they usually help those in need see the path that they really need to take to solve their situation. Papa Smurf realized that it was his duty and calling to make sure that the Smurf community remained in-tact and got along with each other. In the original Peyo comic books and early Smurf history, Papa Smurf was short-tempered and not as gentle towards the other Smurfs. He often lost his cool with the other Smurfs in the community when they did something wrong or were arguing with each other. This is well before Papa Smurf realized his calling of helping others. Sometimes, it takes a match with Gargamel for one to realize where his place really is in his own community. The future of both Papa Smurf and the Smurf colony is still an open-ended concept. With new generations of Smurfs constantly appearing and adapting, Papa Smurf's paternal role in the community remains important. However, he does realize his mortality. He feels it is important for all Smurfs to gain the same leadership skills that he has developed. By handing over his significant and signature red hat to other community Smurfs. While they have Papa Smurf's red hat in their possession, they are to perform all of his leadership duties, including helping to solve community issues. This is incredibly symbolic gesture in the colony. It is his way of finding who has the capability to step into his shoes and really take charge. Papa Smurf is a gentle, kind, altruistic leader of his community that knows the importance of doing the right thing and keeping the peace. Making sure that every one in the Smurf colony gets along is his top priority. However, every leader needs to find a worthy predecessor and make sure that they meet the standards that need to be accomplished. One day, Papa Smurf will find the perfect next Smurf to take charge of colony. Until then, he is happy in his position and caring for all of his Smurfs.
